Three people were injured when a plane traveling from Abaco to Grand Bahama crashed on Tuesday morning.

Shortly before noon, an overdue aircraft, registration HP-1859, was en route to Grand Bahama International Airport with 10 persons on board.

The aircraft had earlier departed Leonard Thompson International Airport.

While en route, the pilot-in-command declared an emergency with air traffic control before communication with the aircraft was subsequently lost.

Air traffic control authorities in Freeport and Nassau immediately initiated emergency notification protocols, alerting the Royal Bahamas Defence Force, Royal Bahamas Police Force, United States Coast Guard, and Bahamas Air Sea Rescue Association (BASRA).

Search and rescue efforts conducted by the United States Coast Guard subsequently located the downed aircraft off the coast of Fort Pierce, where all 10 persons on board were rescued. Three individuals sustained injuries.
