Former NBA star Rick Fox is set to be ratified tonight as a Free National Movement (FNM) candidate following a meeting at party headquarters.
Fox, who has been weighing an entrance to frontline politics, had previously indicated his intention to run in St James, one of two new constituencies created by the recent Boundaries Commission report.
However, with FNM deputy leader Shanendon Cartwright expected to secure the party’s nomination in St James, Fox has agreed to carry the party’s banner in Garden Hills.
Party insiders say the move was finalized after discussions aimed at maximizing the FNM’s electoral prospects as it prepares for the next general election.
Fox’s candidacy is viewed as a strategic boost for the opposition party, which has been seeking to inject fresh energy and star power into its campaign at a time when energizing the party’s base has proven challenging.
A former Los Angeles Lakers player and NBA champion, Fox brings significant name recognition and international profile, assets FNM strategists believe could translate into heightened voter interest and engagement, particularly among younger voters and those less traditionally aligned with the party.
Tonight’s expected ratifications come just days after the governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) announced its final slate of candidates, positioning itself as election-ready across all constituencies.
The FNM, by contrast, has been working to finalize its own lineup amid internal competition and the logistical changes brought on by the creation of new seats.
The party is expected to formally announce Fox’s constituency assignment following the conclusion of tonight’s meeting.
