Sands Re-Evaluating Political Future After Election Defeat

Free National Movement Chairman Dr. Duane Sands say is re-evaluating his political future following his second consecutive general election defeat and the FNM's crushing loss in the May 12 polls.

Sands made the strategic decision to leave his longtime Elizabeth constituency and contest Bamboo Town in the recent general election. The move came after he lost Elizabeth to then-political newcomer JoBeth Coleby-Davis in the 2021 general election.

However, the constituency switch failed to produce the desired result. Sands was defeated by Progressive Liberal Party incumbent Patricia Deveaux, extending his time away from elective office and forcing him to take stock of his next political move.

The setback was compounded by the FNM's overall performance at the polls. Under Sands' tenure as chairman, the party suffered a decisive defeat at the hands of the governing PLP, a result that has prompted him to announce that he will not seek re-election as chairman when the party holds its next convention.

Sands had been among senior FNM figures who believed the party had a realistic opportunity to overcome its internal divisions and mount a serious challenge to the PLP. While he expected a competitive race, the former chairman did not anticipate the scale of the party's defeat.

Since the election, Sands has also opted not to take a seat in the Senate as an FNM appointee, a decision that has fueled speculation about whether he intends to remain actively involved in frontline politics.
