Magistrate Swain elevated to Industrial Tribunal

Former Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain has been sworn in as Acting Vice President of the Industrial Tribunal.

She received her instruments of appointment during a swearing in ceremony by Governor General Cynthia Pratt on Friday.

She has served as acting Deputy Chief Magistrate and acting Chief Magistrate.

Swain most recently heard criminal and civil matters in Magistrates’ Court 11.

And former Industrial Tribunal Vice President Ingrid Cooper-Brooks was sworn in as Acting Deputy Chief Magistrate on Monday. She will now hear civil matters full time in the Court 11.

The judiciary has dedicated a magistrate to solely hearing civil matters during the day so that other magistrates can focus on clearing the criminal backlog.

The magistrates jurisdiction in civil cases has been increased from $5,000 to $20,000.

Cooper-Brooks most recently served as Vice President of the Industrial Tribunal. She was also deputy registrar at the Court of Appeal.
