Little Grand Cay residents face extended power outage as replacement generator delayed

Residents of Little Grand Cay are facing an extended wait for electricity after Bahamas Power and Light says a replacement generation unit needed to restore power is undergoing repairs and testing.

BPL says the unit, which was expected to provide relief to the island following a major mechanical failure of its existing generator, is now expected to be ready for shipment to Little Grand Cay on Wednesday.

The latest development has left residents frustrated, with some questioning when power will actually be restored.

One resident expressed concern that the latest timeline could mean waiting until the end of the week for relief.

“So I guess Thursday or Friday we will get power,” the frustrated resident said.

BPL previously reported that the generator serving Little Grand Cay suffered a “major mechanical failure,” resulting in the prolonged interruption.

In its latest update, the power company said the replacement unit requires repairs and testing before it can be deployed.

“Following necessary repairs and testing, the unit is expected to be ready for shipment to Little Grand Cay on Wednesday,” BPL said.

The company has not provided a firm date for when electricity will be restored, as the replacement unit must first be shipped to the island and installed.

BPL apologized to residents for the extended outage and said it appreciates their patience and understanding as crews work to restore power “as quickly and safely as possible.”

The prolonged outage comes as residents across The Bahamas continue to grapple with ongoing concerns about the reliability of the country’s electricity supply. Prime Minister Philip Davis is expected to discuss power issues during a national address on Monday night.
