Grand Cay water supply cut due to extended power outage

Residents of Grand Cay are facing another disruption, with the island’s water supply expected to remain off until this evening after the local water plant ran out of fuel.

For families in Grand Cay, the loss of both electricity and running water has created an especially difficult situation on a Sunday, traditionally one of the busiest cooking and laundry days in many Bahamian communities.

Without electricity, residents are already struggling to keep food refrigerated and operate essential appliances. The loss of water further complicates basic tasks such as cooking, cleaning and bathing.

The water interruption comes amid an extended power outage that has left residents without reliable electricity for days, adding to growing frustration in the community.

Bahamas Power and Light said the prolonged power interruption in Little Grand Cay stems from a “major mechanical failure” of the island’s existing generator.

The power company had expected a replacement generation unit to provide relief, but BPL said the unit requires repairs and testing before it can be deployed.

“Following necessary repairs and testing, the unit is expected to be ready for shipment to Little Grand Cay on Wednesday,” BPL said in its latest update.

BPL apologized to residents for the extended outage and said it appreciates their patience and understanding as crews work to restore power “as quickly and safely as possible.”
