A fifth person has died following the devastating traffic collision that occurred on Sunday at the intersection of Shirley Street and Church Street.
Police confirmed that a 25-year-old man, who had remained hospitalized in critical condition since the crash, succumbed to his injuries. His death brings the total number of lives lost in the collision to five.
The crash had already claimed the lives of four teenage girls: Diamond Stubbs, Betrica Brown, Evalena Johnson, and Stania Webb, whose deaths have left families, friends, classmates, and the wider community mourning.
According to police, the victims were passengers in a rental vehicle being driven by a 19-year-old man. Investigators say the driver lost control of the vehicle before it crashed into a tree, resulting in catastrophic injuries to those inside.
The driver, who suffered a broken wrist in the crash, has since been taken into police custody as investigations continue. Police have not yet announced whether charges will be filed.
