A 59-year-old man is dead after a violent chain of events that ended with gunfire between suspects and two off-duty police officers on Carmichael Road Sunday morning.
The incident unfolded shortly before 8 a.m. near the intersection of Spikenard and Carmichael Roads, where the off-duty officers, travelling in a private vehicle, reportedly witnessed a silver Suzuki strike a man who was lying in the street.
The victim, a 59-year-old man dressed in a dark T-shirt and blue denim shorts, suffered catastrophic injuries. Paramedics rushed him to hospital, but he later died.
What followed was a dramatic chase through Excellence Estates, Golden Isles Road and Cowpen Road. During the pursuit, police say someone inside the Suzuki opened fire on the officers, who continued to follow the vehicle into the Summerset community.
The confrontation escalated when the suspects stopped, got out of the vehicle armed with guns and allegedly fired several more shots at the officers. The officers returned fire before the suspects jumped back into the Suzuki, sped to a nearby dead end, abandoned the vehicle and fled into nearby bushes.
A search involving responding officers led to the capture of one suspect, who was found with an apparent gunshot wound to the lower back. He was arrested and taken to hospital, where he remains in stable condition under police guard.
Investigators recovered a firearm, the silver Suzuki believed to have been involved in the deadly incident and other pieces of evidence. The officers' vehicle was also struck by gunfire during the exchange.
Police are now investigating both the man's death and the police-involved shooting. The identities of the victim and the suspect have not yet been released.
