Bimini resident Tasha Bullard-Hamilton’s decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming general election is rubbing many Progressive Liberal Party supporters the wrong way.
Bullard-Hamilton had sought the party’s nomination for the newly-created Bimini and Berry Islands constituency. However, days after traveling to New Providence to appear before the PLP candidates committee, she was informed that the party had decided to go with Senator Randy Rolle.
Party insiders claim that Rolle has proven his loyalty to the PLP for many years and deserved the opportunity to serve as a standard-bearer.
However, Bullard-Hamilton and her supporters felt that this is her time to make a run for public office even if it means seeking election without the backing of a major political party.
Her decision is already being criticized in some party circles.
“The decision by Tasha Hamilton to run independently has raised serious red flags among PLPs and residents of Bimini and the Berry Islands,” one party source said. “Many view this move as reckless and divisive, threatening to split the vote and the seat away not because of principle but because of personal ambition.”
Party members believe that now is the time to unite and support the 41 ratified candidates.
“The Progressive Liberal Party has always stood for unity and collective progress. Many of the candidates were not chosen the first time around,” the party member said.
