The Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) has selected Obie Roberts as its candidate for the Southern Shores constituency following a closely watched and at times tense nomination process.

Roberts, the party’s deputy chairman, prevailed over ZNS General Manager Clint Watson, who had also been seeking the PLP nod for the seat.

The contest drew strong support for both men, culminating in a brief clash between their supporters outside PLP headquarters as party officials deliberated on the selection.

Party insiders described the atmosphere as highly charged.

Roberts is the son of the late Bradley Roberts, a former PLP chairman and cabinet minister, and has long-standing ties to the party. He has been active within PLP ranks for years and is widely regarded as a party loyalist with deep institutional knowledge.

Watson, by contrast, was viewed as a relative newcomer to frontline party politics, though he entered the race with considerable name recognition as a veteran broadcaster and senior executive at the state-owned Bahamas Broadcasting Corporation. His candidacy had generated significant public interest, particularly among voters drawn to his media background and public profile.

The PLP has not yet announced a full slate of candidates for the next general election. The party still has 13 additional constituencies for which candidates are to be named.
