GB Passport Office CEO Sophia Edgecombe dies

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is mourning the death of Sophia Edgecombe, Chief Executive Officer at the Passport Office in Freeport, Grand Bahama, who passed away on Tuesday.

Edgecombe was remembered as a competent, committed and dedicated professional who devoted 35 years to public service at the Passport Office.

The ministry described her as a model public servant who consistently went beyond the call of duty in serving both the public and her colleagues.

Officials said the general public and her coworkers benefited from Edgecombe’s determination, professionalism and drive for excellence, particularly her commitment to ensuring that the job was done.

Chief Passport Officer, His Excellency Ambassador Peter Symonette, described her death as devastating, noting that the news came just one day before a team from New Providence was scheduled to travel to Grand Bahama on Wednesday, August 12, to host a memorial service honouring the life of retired Assistant Chief Officer of the Freeport Passport Office, Ivan P.J. Deveaux, who also died recently.

The timing of Edgecombe’s passing has added to what was already expected to be a solemn occasion for staff of the Passport Office, who were preparing to remember a longtime colleague and former senior officer.

Edgecombe’s death marks the loss of a public servant whose 35-year career was defined by dedication to the Passport Office and the people it serves.
