Family island constituency to be split

The government is expected to announce the split of a Family Island constituency, currently held by the PLP, following the completion of the Constituencies Commission’s report, as preparations intensify for this year’s general election.

Sources indicate that a constituency which currently spans more than one Family Island is among two constituencies likely to be divided ahead of the upcoming poll.

Any change would increase the number of constituencies beyond the current total of 39 and could significantly reshape the political landscape in those areas.

Under the Constitution, the Constituencies Commission convenes ahead of each general election to review population data and recommend adjustments to constituency boundaries to ensure fair and equitable representation.

The Commission’s recommendations are then presented to the prime minister for consideration.

The expected changes come as both major political parties continue to prepare for the election. The governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and the opposition Free National Movement (FNM) have already ratified several candidates and are both expected to finalize and ratify their remaining slates before the end of this month.

With the general election constitutionally due this year, any announcement on constituency changes is expected to factor heavily into campaign strategies and candidate placements.
