Prime Minister Philip Davis announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Government of The Bahamas and Emera Incorporated relative to the Grand Bahama Power Company, following a Cabinet meeting held on the island.
Speaking at a news conference, Davis said the agreement represents a significant step toward energy reform in Grand Bahama and could mark the first time the Bahamian government would gain control of Grand Bahama’s power company since the Hawksbill Creek Agreement was signed.
“This MOU reflects a shared commitment to explore a new path forward for energy in Grand Bahama,” the prime minister said.
Davis emphasized that government control of the utility would allow for universal electricity rates across the country, ending what he described as a long-standing disparity between Grand Bahama and the rest of The Bahamas. He said the move would also strengthen national energy planning and support the administration’s broader efforts to reduce electricity costs for households and businesses.
“This is not about control for its own sake,” Davis said. “It is about fairness. It is about affordability. And it is about aligning energy policy with the needs of the people and the modern economy we are building.”
Energy reform, Davis noted, remains a central pillar of his administration’s agenda, linking lower electricity costs to reduced living expenses, increased business competitiveness, and improved prospects for investment, job creation, and long-term economic growth.
The prime minister described the MOU as progress, pointing to what he called careful work and serious engagement between the parties.
He said the government is moving deliberately and responsibly in the public interest, adding that maintaining the status quo was not an option.
