Assistant Superintendent of Police J Leo Ferguson, currently serving as Officer in Charge of the Great Inagua Division, is poised to take his law enforcement experience to the political arena. Ferguson has been tapped to become the Free National Movement (FNM) candidate for the MICAL constituency in the upcoming 2026 General Election, according to sources.
Ferguson, the son of former FNM Senator and Chairman Johnlee Ferguson, has long been immersed in politics, with family ties shaping his early interest in public service and governance.
Ferguson is said to be actively engaging with residents across the islands and cays that comprise the MICAL constituency — Mayaguana, Inagua, Crooked Island, Acklins, and Long Cay — to feel out the concerns and priorities of voters.
The FNM's move to field Ferguson comes as incumbent Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) Member of Parliament Basil McIntosh has announced he will not be seeking re-election or a PLP nomination for MICAL in the 2026 race.
With the seat now set to be open, both major parties are expected to intensify their efforts to secure the constituency, which has fluctuated between PLP and FNM control.
The FNM has already ratified 17 candidates for the next general election.
The PLP, meanwhile, has yet to reveal who will replace McIntosh on the ballot, leaving room for speculation and political maneuvering in the months ahead.
