Trade unionist Perry Cox stabbed to death in Nassau Village

Residents of Nassau Village are mourning the loss ocommunity figure Perry Cox after he was found dead inside a burning residence early Wednesday morning in an incident police are treating as suspicious.

Officers from the Fire Services Department and the Criminal Investigation Department have launched a joint investigation into the structural fire, which occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Lee Street.

According to preliminary reports, police received notification of the blaze and dispatched three fire engine units to the scene. Upon arrival, firefighters observed smoke billowing from a lime-green-and-white single-storey stone duplex.

While working to contain the fire, emergency responders forced entry into one of the apartments, where they discovered an unresponsive 63-year-old man lying near the front door. The victim, later identified as Perry Cox, was removed from the building and examined by Emergency Medical Services personnel. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, the residence sustained extensive fire damage.

Investigators later discovered what appeared to be stab wounds on the victim's body. Police have not yet released details regarding a possible motive or suspect.
