Teen murder suspect mentally ill, lawyers claim

A murder suspect’s lawyers failed to convince a magistrate to send him to Sandilands instead of prison.

Prosecutors say the 17-year-old boy is responsible for the August 4 fatal shooting of Rudolph Roberts at Lumumba Lane.

The teen, who can’t be named for legal reasons, was not required to enter a plea to the charge when he appeared before Magistrate Samuel McKinney.

His lawyers Ian Cargill and Wendawn Frazer asked the court to send the teenager to Sandilands because he had an undisclosed mental issue.

However, the magistrate remanded the alleged killer to the juvenile section of the prison after citing security concerns.

The teen returns to court on November 19.
