The 19-year-old driver accused of causing the crash that claimed the lives of five teenagers after his car struck a tree on Shirley Street last month has been charged in connection with the fatal accident.
Marcus Thacker Jr has been charged with five counts of vehicular manslaughter. Prosecutors allege that on the morning of Sunday, June 28, he drove a vehicle west along Shirley Street in a manner dangerous to the public, resulting in the deaths of Diamond Stubbs, Evalena Johnson, Stania Webb, Betrica Brown and Keno Gordon.
Stubbs, Johnson, Webb and Brown died at the scene of the crash. Gordon succumbed to his injuries nearly a week later.
Thacker was not required to enter pleas to the charges. The case was adjourned to October 22 for the presentation of a voluntary bill of indictment.
Bail was granted in the amount of $30,000. As a condition of his release, Thacker is required to wear an electronic monitoring ankle bracelet.
According to police, eight people were inside the grey Mazda when Thacker allegedly lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. Thacker sustained a broken wrist in the collision.
