Despite celebrity endorsements, star-studded appearances and a social media campaign filled with famous faces, Rick Fox failed to convince voters in Garden Hills to send him to Parliament in the May 12 general election.
The Free National Movement candidate lost to incumbent Mario Bowleg of the Progressive Liberal Party, who secured another term as part of a sweeping PLP victory at the polls.
Fox, a former NBA champion turned actor, entered the race with considerable international recognition and attempted to use his celebrity connections to energize voters in the constituency. Throughout the campaign, Fox flooded social media with endorsements from high-profile friends and associates, including his ex-wife, singer and actress Vanessa Williams, former NBA superstar Shaquille O'Neal and Jamaican reggae artist Beenie Man.
Fox also brought several former Hollywood co-stars to The Bahamas to attend campaign events in an effort to generate excitement around his candidacy.
But while the appearances generated headlines and social media attention, they did little to sway voters in Garden Hills, many of whom appeared more focused on local representation and constituency issues than celebrity backing.
The campaign also faced criticism after Fox acknowledged publicly that he had never voted in The Bahamas prior to entering the race. Political opponents seized on the admission, questioning his connection to the everyday concerns of Bahamian voters and portraying him as politically inexperienced despite his fame abroad.
Bowleg, who first won the Garden Hills seat in 2021, campaigned heavily on his record in office and the broader popularity of the PLP government. On Election Day, voters returned him to Parliament comfortably as the governing party rolled to a landslide national victory.
For Fox, the loss marked a disappointing end to a campaign that relied heavily on star power but ultimately failed to translate celebrity into votes.
