Confusion erupted at a Rubis service station on East and Soldier Road today after an attempted fuel giveaway connected to Free National Movement candidate for Garden Hills, Rick Fox, reportedly proceeded without prior authorization from the company, prompting the temporary closure of the station.
Eyewitnesses described long lines of motorists and uncertainty at the location as residents gathered expecting free fuel. The situation intensified after Fox was reportedly informed he would not be permitted to purchase gas for the planned giveaway due to the lack of prior coordination with station management.
Despite the disruption, Fox maintained that the effort was intended to help residents struggling with rising costs.
“Today wasn’t about politics. It was about people,” Fox said amid the controversy.
In a statement issued afterward, Rubis confirmed that services at its East and Soldier Road location were temporarily suspended because company officials had not been informed in advance about the planned political campaign activity.
Rubis says the temporary suspension of services at its East and Soldier Road service station resulted from not being informed in advance of Fox’s planned campaign activities at the location.
According to Rubis, the absence of prior notice prevented the implementation of required safety and operational measures necessary to manage large crowds and ensure smooth operations at the busy station.
The company emphasized that while it supports community initiatives regardless of political affiliation, all events conducted on its premises must first receive approval and proper coordination.
The incident quickly became a topic of public discussion online, with some residents criticizing the lack of coordination while others defended the intention behind the proposed giveaway.
