PM Minnis meddling in Family Island contracts

Updated: Nov 18, 2020

Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis has "urgently" requested a copy of all workplace cleaning contracts over the last six months from all family island administrators.

It seems Minnis wants to scrutinize all family island contracts to ensure only Free National Movement supporters get work cleaning government entities during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a letter to family island administrators, dated October, 9,2020, Senior Assistant Secretary of Administration in the Ministry of Transport and Local Government wrote, "I am directed to advise that the Prime Minister has requested sight of all contracts issued during the last six months for the cleaning and sanitizing of all departments, clinics, authorities, agencies and substations due to Covid-19 in your district."

The Senior Assistant Secretary asked family island administrators to forward the information "urgently for onward transmission to the Prime Minister's attention".

Island administrators were shocked by this request and questioned why the man responsible for leading the entire country during a health and economic crisis, brought on by Covid-19, would have the time to scrutinize contracts instead of delegating this task to the Minister of Local Government.

As voter discontent grows in the final months of the Minnis Administration's term in office, family island administrators say they suspect Minnis is trying to ensure that only proven FNM supporters get cleaning contracts, going forward.

Did Minnis choose not to give himself a ministerial portfolio, a departure from past prime ministers, to give himself more time to interfere in the various ministries?
