Prime Minister Philip Davis will meet with his choice for the position of Commissioner of Police this afternoon. Davis says he has someone in mind to replace Clayton Fernander but an official announcement will not be made until he speaks with Opposition Leader Michael Pintard.

Davis and Pintard met today to discuss the prime minister’s recommendation and get the opposition’s feedback.

Earlier today, Davis announced that he had accepted Fernander’s resignation amid growing calls for the top cop to step down.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force has been mired in scandal after an indictment revealed that two police officers were among several Bahamians who have been charged in relation to a drug smuggling operation.

Fernander was appointed as commissioner in 2022 after then-police chief Paul Rolle retired and took on an ambassador post in the United Kingdom.

Fernander joined the police force in 1982 and started in the Traffic Division before climbing up the ranks to the senior position.
