PM Davis rejects Donald Trump’s deportation flights proposal

The Office of the Prime Minister issued a statement today addressing recent reports regarding a proposal from the Trump transition team in the United States that suggested The Bahamas accept deportation flights carrying migrants from other countries.

The government confirmed that the proposal was presented for review but was "firmly rejected" by Prime Minister Philip Davis after careful consideration.

"The Bahamas simply does not have the resources to accommodate such a request," the statement read. "The Prime Minister’s priorities remain focused on addressing the concerns of The Bahamian people, and no further engagement has occurred with the Trump transition team or any other entity on this matter since the rejection."

The incoming Trump administration is reportedly preparing a list of countries to which it may deport migrants when their home countries refuse to accept them.

The countries include but may not be limited to Turks and Caicos, the Bahamas, Panama and Grenada, according to sources.

The proposal, which came to light in recent reports, had sparked concern among some citizens and advocacy groups regarding its potential implications for the country's resources and immigration system.

The Prime Minister's office emphasized that the rejection was final, with no intention to revisit the matter.

"The Government of The Bahamas remains steadfast in its position," the statement concluded.

As of now, there has been no official comment from the U.S. regarding The Bahamas' decision. However, the rejection underscores the country’s commitment to its own priorities, particularly at a time when resources are already stretched to address domestic needs.
