Prime Minister Philip Davis has instructed the Constituencies Commission to delay submitting its long-anticipated boundaries report until the government has greater clarity on what the new voter register will look like.
The report, initially expected this month, could bring sweeping changes to the electoral landscape—including a possible proposal to split West Grand Bahama and Bimini into two separate constituencies, and potential realignments in western New Providence.
Davis said they are still reviewing the matter and it would be premature to finalize recommendations on constituency boundaries without a solid understanding of the voter distribution across the country.
Currently, The Bahamas has 39 parliamentary constituencies.
The Constituencies Commission, tasked with reviewing and adjusting those boundaries based on population shifts and growth patterns, has been deliberating behind closed doors for weeks.
The Commission comprises Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper, Tall Pines MP Dr. Michael Darville, St. Barnabas MP Shanendon Cartwright, and Supreme Court Justice Gregory Hilton. Cooper and Darville represent the governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), while Cartwright represents the Free National Movement (FNM).
Insiders suggest the proposed changes—especially the potential division of West Grand Bahama and Bimini—could be politically significant, shifting voting dynamics in key areas.
One rumour stirring political circles is that Cartwright may be positioning himself for an FNM nomination in a western New Providence constituency.
