National athlete gets probation for death threat

A member of the national soccer team threatened to kill a man who questioned him about impregnating his teenage sister.

Instead of replying in a civil manner, Jaico Choute sent a voice message in which he threatened to kill the 16-year-old girl’s brother.

Choute, 22, didn’t face charges regarding having sex with a minor. That’s because he began his intimate relationship with the teenager after she reached the age of consent.

His lawyer Tonique Lewis said the girl’s father and uncles came to his home in Gambier Village and beat him up before the brother called.

According to Ms Lewis, Choute was still angry about being ganged when the brother called him.

Ms Lewis asked the magistrate not to impose a conviction as it was Choute’s first offense.

She said that Choute wouldn’t be able to travel to soccer matches with the team if he had a criminal record.

Assistant Chief Magistrate Subusola Swain sentenced Choute to probation for one year.
