As the number of coronavirus cases in the country approaches 700, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis is expected to announce a longer lockdown when he addresses the nation tonight at 8.

Government insiders are predicting Minnis could impose a two-week lockdown with just essential stores remaining open in order to curb the spread of the virus, which has infected 679 people.

31 new cases were confirmed today - 22 on Grand Bahama and 9 on New Providence. Health officials fear The Bahamas could hit the dreaded 1,000 case milestone this month, at this pace.

Grand Bahama’s two-week lockdown is nearing an end but the Covid hotspot, which has a staggering 320 cases, could face a new lockdown as infections continue to increase at a rapid pace, despite restrictions.

Minnis previously announced two weekend lockdowns for the rest of the country but restrictions were eased this holiday weekend to allow Bahamians to prepare for Hurricane Isaias, which moved away from the Bahamas on Sunday morning.
