The Ministry of Health and Wellness in The Bahamas has echoed the call of the World Health Organization (WHO) urging the new Trump administration to reconsider its decision to withdraw from the global health body.
Following the swearing-in of the 47th President of the United States, Donald Trump, the administration announced plans to exit the WHO, citing concerns over the agency's handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other international health crises.
In response, WHO expressed its regret over the decision, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration to address global health challenges and urging the U.S. to reconsider, noting the potential impact on the health and well-being of millions worldwide.
In a statement today, Minister of Health & Wellness Dr. Michael Darville reaffirmed The Bahamas’ commitment to WHO and its regional counterpart, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
“We have built an excellent relationship with representatives of the WHO and PAHO on post-pandemic preparedness, infectious and non-infectious disease surveillance, mental health issues, and the impact of violence on public health,” Minister Darville said.
He also emphasized the importance of regional collaboration, highlighting that The Bahamas has worked closely with its Caribbean neighbors in tackling these health challenges.
“Much the same has happened with our sister Caribbean countries. While we hope that the U.S. government reconsiders its pronouncement, The Bahamas remains committed to the important work our partnerships have forged with the WHO and PAHO as we seek to protect the health and well-being of Bahamians,” Darville added.
The announcement from the U.S. administration has raised concerns about the future of global health cooperation, with many fearing that the U.S. withdrawal could weaken international efforts to combat diseases and prepare for future health emergencies.
As the world continues to recover from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Bahamas government said it remains steadfast in its support for the WHO and its mission, emphasizing the critical importance of global solidarity in safeguarding public health worldwide.
