Free National Movement (FNM) Member of Parliament Adrian White is facing backlash after posting a video of himself wiping his dirty sneakers on a Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) campaign poster, in what many have described as an immature and disrespectful act.
The video, which circulated on social media Friday evening, shows the St. Anne’s MP laughing as he drags his shoes across a PLP poster he encountered on the street.
The act immediately drew condemnation from PLP supporters. who called it a new low in Bahamian political behavior.
Among the first to respond was Karen Hamilton, chairman of the PLP’s St. Anne’s branch, who slammed White’s behavior as symbolic of how the FNM views ordinary Bahamians.
“That’s all we are to Mr. Adrian White and that’s all we would ever be to the FNM — a doormat,” Hamilton said. “Instead of picking up the PLP sign, which represents the people, he wipes his shoes on the poster as if to say, ‘This is exactly how I feel about you. This is exactly how I grade you. This is exactly how I will treat you.’ Adrian, you should be ashamed of yourself and you owe all the people of The Bahamas an apology.”
This is not the first time White has faced criticism for controversial remarks about PLP supporters. In April, he was accused of showing disdain toward the governing party’s base after an edited clip of his comments on radio talk show surfaced online.
In that video, White declared that “sensible people vote FNM.” When pressed to clarify, he added, “Every constituency has voted FNM except for Englerston, right?”
