Dr. Hubert Minnis exits House before Opposition MPs suspended

Formed Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis walked out of the House of Assembly just before six opposition members of Parliament were suspended for two sittings.

Minnis was notably the only opposition MP not to be suspended following the contentious series of events that led to the disciplinary actions.

The suspension of the six opposition MPs followed a chaotic scene in the House of Assembly last week when St. Barnabas MP Shanendon Cartwright threw the ceremonial mace out of the window in protest.

The incident led to the removal of several MPs by police, a move that further polarized tensions between the governing Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) and the opposition.

Minnis was absent from the chamber during the altercation, which has sparked criticism and internal debate within the FNM.

His decision to walk out of the session today has raised eyebrows and is being viewed as a clear indication of the continuing rift between him and his successor and party leader, Michael Pintard.

Pintard was re-elected FNM leader in June following a bitter leadership contest with Minnis.

Pintard served as a cabinet minister under Minnis' administration from 2017 to 2021 but has since distanced himself from the former prime minister.
