Former NBA player and Free National Movement (FNM) candidate for Garden Hills Rick Fox is drawing attention and criticism for enlisting international celebrities to publicly support his campaign on social media and at political events in the days before the general election.

Among the high-profile figures reportedly backing Fox are former NBA star Shaquille O'Neal, reggae artist Buju Banton, and actor Boris Kodjoe. Videos circulating online feature celebrity messages encouraging Bahamians to support Fox ahead of Tuesday’s vote, while there have been appearances by some of the stars during final campaign events.

The celebrity-driven strategy has generated mixed reactions among voters and political observers, with some questioning whether international endorsements resonate with the day-to-day concerns of Bahamians.

It reinforces a perception that Fox is disconnected from ordinary Bahamian experiences.

Questions have also resurfaced over Fox’s own political engagement prior to entering the race. Fox has publicly acknowledged in past interviews that he had never voted in a Bahamian general election before becoming an FNM candidate, a point opponents say undermines his efforts to present himself as a champion for the constituency.

The former Los Angeles Lakers player has also faced scrutiny over his wealth and philanthropic record. While Fox has spoken openly about his financial success in business and entertainment, critics contend there is limited public evidence of sustained charitable or development initiatives in the Bahamas prior to his political bid.

The Garden Hills race is being closely watched as one of several competitive constituencies that could help determine the outcome of the general election.
