Teachers at CV Bethel Senior High School walked off campus today to meet with representatives from the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) following a disturbing incident on Monday involving a female student who verbally assaulted and threatened a teacher.

The student had reportedly cursed at the teacher, made explicit threats, and had to be physically restrained from attacking the educator.

Police were called to the scene and had to call for backup during the altercation.

The incident unfolded after the female student was brought to the school office following a separate altercation with another student.

Reports indicate that the student and her accomplice attacked a fellow female student before the situation escalated further with the teacher.

In the wake of the incident, teachers submitted a formal list of safety concerns to the school principal and held multiple meetings to discuss the challenges they face in ensuring a safe and secure environment for both staff and students. The teachers have expressed ongoing concerns about their safety while performing their duties.

The union's area vice president attempted to visit the school campus today to address these concerns, but was locked out of the premises. In response, teachers decided to step outside the school gates today to meet with the union representative and discuss the situation further.

The Bahamas Union of Teachers has expressed solidarity with the educators, stressing the need for immediate action to ensure that such incidents do not continue to jeopardize the safety of staff and students at the school.

The union has called for urgent dialogue with the Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities to address the growing safety concerns in schools across the country.
