Veteran journalist and media executive Clint Watson is hoping to replace Southern Shores MP Leroy Major as the Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP) candidate in the 2026 General Election.

Watson, who currently serves as general manager of the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (ZNS), was among several high-profile individuals who attended the PLP’s candidate training module on Saturday — a move that has fueled speculation about his political ambitions.

When asked whether incumbent Leroy Major would be renominated for the Southern Shores seat, Prime Minister Philip Davis said he could not say at this time.

However, he acknowledged that Watson has expressed political aspirations within the PLP for some time.

Watson has had a long and visible career in Bahamian media, gaining prominence as a ZNS news anchor known for covering the administrations of successive prime ministers. He later transitioned to become news director at Eyewitness News before stepping away from journalism to take up the role of press secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister.

After a brief stint in that post, he was reassigned to ZNS as general manager.

Meanwhile, MP Leroy Major has largely kept a low profile during his term but recently said that he hopes to secure the PLP’s nomination once again.

The Southern Shores seat was flipped by the PLP in the 2021 general election when Major unseated Free National Movement incumbent Frankie Campbell.
