Former head of the Criminal Investigation Department Chief Superintendent Michael Johnson has been transferred to the Commissioner of Police’s office, just two months after he agreed to take garden leave.
This move follows a deepening investigation by the Security and Intelligence Branch into voice recordings involving a wanted man, who was murdered earlier this year, and two men who promised that if he paid a certain amount of money he would not be charged with a million-dollar heist at a private airport in New Providence.
The situation has escalated, as two other men allegedly linked to the theft case have also been killed this year.
To bolster the investigation, law enforcement experts from the United Kingdom and the United States are assisting the Royal Bahamas Police Force, with Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander stating the inquiry is expected to conclude by year’s end.
The transfer of Johnson before the conclusion of the closely-watched investigation has raised eyebrows among Bahamians who are questioning the rationale behind Johnson’s move while he remains on garden leave.
