Barbados is making strides to become a Republic. The country intends to remove Queen Elizabeth as the Head of State by November 2021 during the country’s 55th Independence anniversary.

This isn't the first time leaders have discussed this move.

In 2015, then Prime Minister Freundel Stuart announced plans to make Barbados a republic by November 2016, during the 50th Independence anniversary.

Governor General of Barbados Dame Sandra Mason, noted in her speech, "The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind. Barbadians want a Barbadian head of state."
