A Bahamian man has been sentenced for smuggling Chinese and Cuban immigrants into Florida from Grand Bahama.

Joshua Lewis, 21, was jailed for one year and one day by a Florida judge.

Lewis made the smuggling run from West End to Palm Beach just three days after he was deported from Miami on January 14, 2020.

Lewis and the 12 immigrants swam ashore after their boat capsized in bad weather. They were arrested soon after. The immigrants told investigators that they had paid smugglers $8,000 each.

Lewis faced a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment, but he reached a plea deal with prosecutors.
