Bahamian-American aerospace engineer and entrepreneur Aisha Bowe made history this morning, becoming the first Bahamian and first Exumian to travel to space.

Bowe was among a groundbreaking all-female crew of six aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-31 mission — a suborbital spaceflight that has captured global attention.

The historic journey lasted approximately 10 minutes, taking the crew more than 62 miles above Earth’s surface to the edge of space.

The mission offered the passengers a few breathtaking moments of weightlessness before their capsule gently returned to the desert landscape of West Texas.

Bowe, who is of Bahamian descent and whose roots trace back to Exuma, now holds the distinction of being the first person from The Bahamas to reach space — a milestone hailed by leaders and citizens alike.

Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper praised Bowe in a statement following the successful flight:

“History made! Aisha Bowe, a proud daughter of The Bahamas and native of Exuma, has etched her name in the stars — literally. Today, she became the first Bahamian and first Exumian to travel to space, aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard NS-31 mission,” Cooper said.

“From the shores of Exuma to the edge of space, Aisha’s journey is a shining example of what vision, determination, and excellence can achieve."

Cooper added that Bowe, an accomplished aerospace engineer and founder of STEMBoard, has not only broken barriers in science and technology, but also become an international inspiration. We celebrate Aisha Bowe not only for her incredible achievement, but for representing our nation with grace, brilliance, and boldness. She is proof that Bahamians can reach for the stars—because one of us just did."

The mission marked one of the most highly anticipated space tourism launches in recent years, with an all-woman lineup, that included sexual assault survivor and activist Amanda Nguyen, Gayle King, Katy Perry and Lauren Sanchez.
