Following a chaotic scene that erupted at the Carmichael Road Detention Centre on Tuesday morning, the Department of Immigration says it has been recommended that the eight Haitian nationals involved in the incident be charged in the Magistrate’s Court this week with destruction of government property.
On Tuesday, Haitian nationals refused to eat the food provided by the Centre until they were given a date for their departure flight into Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
However, they got into it over the hunger strike, a fight broke out and a fence was damaged.
Immigration claims their repatriation was postponed in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
133 people are being held at the Detention Centre. 75 of them are Haitian nationals.
