The blind leading the blind: Govt bungles state of emergency extension

.

The state of emergency will expire at midnight after the Minnis Administration bungled the extension of the proclamation of the state of emergency. A new proclamation is required and it cannot be extended by resolution. It is unlikely that can happen before tomorrow.

This blunder comes days after Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis announced in the House of Assembly that Emergency Powers would be extended to the end of July.

Despite having a super-sized cabinet and the overwhelming majority of seats in parliament, not one person in the Minnis-led government picked up on this mistake? Not the Prime Minister? Not the Deputy Prime Minister? Not the Attorney General?

Opposition leader Philip Davis said Attorney General Carl Bethel has a course of action to take.

“The collapse of the legal regime regarding the extension of the proclamation of the state of public emergency only shows what we have said all along and it is that this government is shockingly inept and incompetent,” Davis said in a statement.

“This is an enormous embarrassment for and failure of this Minnis led government,” he added.

Davis said the question must then be asked, if they got this simple procedural issue wrong what else have they gotten wrong in the course of governance?

“This is just the latest in a series of missteps, misinformation and disinformation on the part of this government,” according to Davis.

He said the public should have little confidence in this Minnis led administration and the expectation is that heads must roll.
