Prime Minister Philip Davis is meeting today with several prominent labour union leaders as tensions mount over delayed salary increases for public sector workers.
A protest was led yesterday by members of the Bahamas Union of Teachers (BUT) and the Bahamas Public Services Union (BPSU), who called on the Davis administration to issue promised salary increases this month rather than before Christmas, as previously indicated by the prime minister.
Prime Minister Davis is convening a series of closed-door meetings at the Office of the Prime Minister this morning to address the concerns raised and to continue broader discussions on industrial relations and workforce development.
The Prime Minister’s meeting schedule includes:
• 10:00 A.M. – Sandra Major, President of the Bahamas Educators, Counsellors and Allied Workers Union (BECAWU)
• 10:30 A.M. – Stephen McPhee, President of the Bahamas Educators and Managerial Union (BEMU)
• 11:45 A.M. – Obie Ferguson, President of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Trade Union Congress (CBTUC)
The ongoing consultations are aimed at strengthening collaboration with union leaders and tackling key issues affecting workers across various sectors.
These discussions come at a critical juncture for the Davis administration, which is under pressure to manage rising public sector demands while balancing fiscal responsibility.
Representatives from both BUT and BPSU are not on today's official schedule.
