A 21-year-old man has been charged in connection with the car crash that claimed the life of prominent Bahamian artist Stefan Davis in Miami-Dade, Florida.

Luis Manuel Perez has been charged with vehicular homicide. He was taken into custody following the September 2 crash near Northwest 51st Terrace and Northwest 33rd Avenue.

Perez had deserted his post at Fort Bliss, Texas, in February and had an active warrant for military desertion. Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies said members of the Robbery Intervention Detail had stopped Perez when they discovered the outstanding warrant. Authorities said Perez then fled the traffic stop.

Investigators said Perez drove into a dead-end street, turned around and continued at a high rate of speed before running a stop sign and crashing his 2018 Ford Mustang into a vehicle driven by Davis.

The impact caused Davis’ vehicle to overturn before the vehicles collided with an unmarked Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

Davis, who was preparing to celebrate his 56th birthday on September 6, was rushed to hospital but later died from his injuries.
