Free National Movement MP for St. Anne's Adrian White is facing criticism after attending the U.S. Embassy's celebration marking the 250th anniversary of American independence on Friday night wearing a bright red hat bearing the slogan, "Trump Was Right About Everything."
The hat, which openly expresses support for U.S. President Donald Trump, quickly became a talking point on social media and in political circles, with some Bahamians questioning whether it was appropriate for a sitting Member of Parliament to publicly display campaign-style merchandise supporting the leader of another country while attending an official diplomatic function.
Critics argued that the display was particularly ill-timed given that some of the Trump administration's policies have been viewed as adversely affecting The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean. Others said elected officials should exercise greater political judgment at events intended to celebrate the longstanding relationship between The Bahamas and the United States rather than appearing to endorse a particular foreign political figure.
The incident also revived discussion about White's political style. During last year's Golden Isles by-election campaign, he drew criticism after stomping on a Progressive Liberal Party campaign poster, an act that opponents described as unbecoming of a parliamentarian. It did not help that White refused to apologize for his behavior. The by-election was ultimately won by the PLP.
Since entering Parliament, White has frequently been involved in heated exchanges in the House of Assembly and has attracted attention for his combative approach. His detractors argue that Friday night's appearance reinforces concerns that he prioritizes provocative political gestures over substantive representation of his St. Anne's constituents.
Some critics described the episode as "another nail in the coffin" for the Free National Movement, arguing that the image of one of its MPs wearing a pro-Trump hat does little to help the party rebuild following its overwhelming defeat in the May 12 general election.
