FNM political appointee chartered Bahamasair flight to Acklins for holiday weekend

Acklins residents are seeing red after a Bahamasair executive, who is a political appointee with strong FNM ties, used her connections to organize a chartered Bahamasair flight to the island over the August Monday holiday weekend.

During a press conference hosted by the Ministry of Health on Monday, Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis suggested that the four confirmed cases of coronavirus reported on Acklins are the result of outsiders traveling to the island to party over the holiday weekend.

However, Minnis failed to mention that one of his political appointees, Senior Director of Operations Betty Moss-Benoit, pulled a Bahamasair flight scheduled to service another island and sent it to Acklins instead.

Benoit, a former chairman of the FNM Women’s Branch and a former board member, is the second in command to Bahamasair Managing Director Tracy Cooper.

Employees say she has been on the job for about a year and was brought in by airline chairman Tommy Turnquest. Staff members under her say Benoit has no knowledge of the struggling airline’s operations and she appears to have a political agenda.

Though Minnis made a big deal of publicly chastising those New Providence residents who traveled to Acklins for the weekend, employees predict there will be no consequences for Madame Benoit, who ensured the Bahamasair flight to Acklins was filled with her family members and friends.
