Progressive Liberal Party leader Philip “Brave” Davis announced Sunday afternoon that he has been infected with COVID-19 and is in hospital.
“This last six weeks, more than 1,000 Bahamians learned they have tested positive for the Covid virus. I learned the same thing. I am in hospital receiving excellent care,” Davis said in a voice note released by the PLP.
The revelation comes one day after Davis and PLP Senator Dr. Michael Darville visited the hospital on Saturday to be examined “out of an abundance of caution”. It is unclear if Darville was also tested for the virus, which has infected 1,252 Bahamians as of Saturday.
“My family and I thank you for the many prayers and well wishes we have received,” Davis said.
He also thanked the healthcare professionals who have tended to him during his hospitalization.
“We all owe an enormous debt of gratitude to the nurses, doctors and the healthcare workers who are working day and night. Please include them in your prayers also,” he added from his hospital bed.
“One of the greatest strengths as a people is how we care for each other. Let’s find new ways to do this now. Look out for your neighbors, buy an extra bag of groceries for a friend in need and check on someone who may need your support.”
“I know brighter days are ahead for all of us,” Davis said.
The country recorded a daily high in cases on Saturday with 133 additional COVID-19 cases. Over 100 of those cases are on New Providence. The spike in new cases is the result of a backlog of tests.
