Mayaguana was plunged into darkness after a Bahamas Power and Light (BPL) engine, which had been experiencing an oil leak, caught fire, causing an islandwide black out.
Black smoke could be seen emanating from the facility this morning.
According to sources, management instructed technicians on the island to run the engine, even though it was leaking. Consequently, the engine burned and a technician suffered minor burns.
Frustrated residents and business owners have been told power supply should be restored by Wednesday.
They’re hoping the incident will serve as a wake up call for BPL management which appears to be struggling to keep the lights on several family islands.
Residents of Abaco have also complained of inconsistent power supply in recent days with no real resolution in sight.
